Overstock
The supply chain for designer goods worldwide is very complex. Orders are placed by top tier retailers far in advance of the line being shipped and put on the shelves. For this reason buyers for the top tier retailers often overbuy. But because they are licensed retailers for the designer, they have the option to send product back to the agent if it doesn’t sell before the new line is ready to go on the shelves.
Similarly, licensed agents place orders to the designers based on an estimate that they will need to supply the top tier retailers in their particular part of the world. If buyers for retailers do not purchase all the items or send back overstock, the agent must then find alternate ways of selling this very expensive inventory. It is typical that licensed agents will not sell all the items through retail channels, or will receive items back from these retailers (overstock), when a new line is ready to be introduced to the public.
This happens all over the world and is where we get an opportunity to buy overstock items at deeply discounted prices and pass this opportunity on to our customers. The U.S. is still the biggest consumer market in the world so these agents look to the U.S. to sell their overstock product.
This is the reason that you most likely will not see an item offered by us still on the shelves at Saks™. Saks™ and other top tier retailers have returned unsold items to their agents and are now offering the designer’s new line.
Differences in style design
Sometimes you will notice that an item offered at our site is not exactly the same as the item you saw at a top tier retailer, or that a friend has purchased from a top tier retailer. It may differ slightly. This is because designers sell different models of items in different countries around the world. Our suppliers may have procured items from an authorized reseller in Italy or elsewhere in Europe. These specific items may differ than the model originally offered in the U.S., or it may have not been previously offered in the U.S. at all.
And if you’re buying last year’s style for a discounted price, you typically won’t be able to walk into Saks™ and find your bag. Saks™ is now onto the newest line. Even if your bag was at Saks™, your bag may have come from Europe and thus was intended for a different market, and is made somewhat differently. Lastly, the sales clerk at Saks™ isn’t going to let you handle that bag closely enough anyway. Inspection means turning the bag inside out if necessary.
If you plan on going to a Designer store for authentication, I can save you the trip!
To prove this, I took a designer handbag that I purchased from Neiman Marcus into a Gucci store and told them I got it on a web site. I asked them if they could tell me if it was authentic. They immediately gave me a dirty look and said it was a fake. All the while the handbag really came from them! They say this to people all the time. You have to realize that they didn't make the sale; they lost money and you as a customer. The fact that you got it for much less somewhere else is highly insulting to them and now you're going back to them for verification.
Let’s face it; it’s a slap in the face for them. If you were them how would you feel? Would you encourage people to buy the same products you sell elsewhere for less? Do you think that the sales person that didn't make a commission on the sale wants to help you out and is really happy for you? They want to win you back as a customer so they have to say it is fake and put doubt in your mind so you'll get mad, feel like you were taken advantage of and return the handbag from where you got it. Then you'll go back and spend hundreds of dollars more and buy it from them.
Note, if you mention web sites or other venues such as eBay... forget it! Authorized designer stores tend to hate on line web sites (except their own) because people can buy their products from them for so much less. Think about it, if you are an authorized store in the U.S. selling handbags for $1,000 and making all that money. Then you found out someone else was selling the same handbag for $500, wouldn't you try to protect your business? Of course you would and that is what is happening everyday.
